What would do you do if you get stuck at something and want to understand it? Ask someone or search, right? Well, Shah Rukh Khan was almost in a similar situation when he had to teach his son some grammar on phrases and clauses.
SRK did start well but when it came to explaining 'Predicate' he had no clue what it was! He tweeted loud "what the hell is predicate????" and added "sounds like a predator who ate something...at this point i feel...i will be the food for this predator... predicate... predicate.. go away shoo" All this is real time was quiet funny to see. And like many of his fans I too was enjoying his live tweets! Have a look at his tweet transcript below.
And this was not the end. As soon as Shah Rukh tweeted 'predicate', he got flooded with responses from all his fans. I checked on Google updates by searching for 'Predicate' and countless tweets were continuously dropping in reply to Shah Rukh's question. Many explanations came, with different examples. With so much 'information at your desktop', I'm sure Shah Rukh must have found it real easy to explain 'Predicate' to his son! In the end, he did thank all for the 'tuitions'.
Out of curiosity, I once again checked on Google updates for 'Predicate' for the entire month of August 2010 and this time got to see a clear 'spike' (see the red arrow below) on August 28, the day when he tweeted about 'Predicate'!
Even Shah Rukh wouldn't have expected the overflowing response to his one little tweet! But then he's the King and is no ordinary tweeter. This was a moment when the star used the power of social media for good use, i.e. to teach his son. Post a comment below to share how you've used Twitter for understanding something you didn't know. World news at one place
Everyday when I come back from my workplace, the first thing I do is to go through some news sites. It has become a kind of hobby now! I like keeping myself updated with the events taking place in our world.
My preferred news sources are Google News, CNN-IBN, NDTV and BBC. Amongst the four, I like Google News for the way they classify news into different sections like Top News, India, World, etc. They give 3 news snippets under which you come across top news. I do tend to read 1 or 2 complete posts from this page. CNN-IBN and NDTV are good sites to catch on the Indian scenario. Some of their posts are really good. Lastly, I like BBC for the way they present news on their site, it's so professional, neat and it compels you to read more.
Recently, I was surfing and bumped into a news site - World News. I was surprised to see such a neat and simple yet engaging format. Very rarely do you find such sites with such a superior professional feel and finish, it gave me a very good first impression and my urge to explore more increased. As I jumped from one link to the other, I found it more and more interesting!
On their homepage, you will find a news window with the top 10 headlines which is followed below by the Latest World News and Most Popular sections. It works on some code which sources news from most of the major news networks across the world! I read some news post from the links and they were some really good news posts which I enjoyed reading a lot! If you visit it regularly, you'll get a feel of the style adopted by major news networks. I would strongly recommend this site to all aspirant students who really want to enhance their General or rather World Knowledge for various reasons! Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
It doesn't end here, as you scroll down you'll see news by countries, lifestyle, sports, poverty, climate and what not! Further down it has more news and then comes a multiple optional 'News filter'. I tried searching some news by entering keywords like India, climate, travel, etc and got a great summarised search result. Try it yourself in the search box below.
Overall, I would sum up by saying it's a great site for your daily bout of world news at one place! A thumbs up from maktion!

Teaching PPT - My color question!
Situation: Asked to give a PPT training to a group of 15 senior colleagues, time limit: 3 hours. Well, although this situation came all of a sudden, I took out some time to think how can I make this training session 'effective'? How can I offer an enhanced learning experience? The challenge was even bigger as here the audience was not younger but elder to me! So, it meant they would be coming with their own pre-conceived notions and adapting to change can prove difficult. But, nothing like this happened, not at all! Why? Read on.
PowerPoint is not just a tool, it's a canvas for me where I can paint my ideas, express my thoughts, etc. I just love working on it so much. No tool has been so effective in exhibiting information in a concise way. Whether it's students, teachers, professionals or even Steve Jobs, everyone uses a PPT to show what s/he wants to convey. When this opportunity to came to me, I knew I was gonna love it. After all, I couldn't create PowerPoint but I can propagate its usage and benefits for sure! ;)
I had to start from scratch for preparing the training deck, notes, etc for the session. It was tough as it wasn't done before, hence I had to rely on my intuition - what would be the best way to teach these guys? How will they imbibe in 3 hours? What would actually help them and serve the purpose of this session? I thought of some simple things, prepared them and implemented. I'll share some of them so that in case you ever get an opportunity, you can consider this approach:
1. To understand my audience's familiarity with PPT:
It's always helpful if you know your audience well. It helps you in preparing well and remain focussed. I mailed a one page questionnaire in which I asked:

1. To understand my audience's familiarity with PPT:
It's always helpful if you know your audience well. It helps you in preparing well and remain focussed. I mailed a one page questionnaire in which I asked:
- 3 difficulties that they face in making a PPT
- 3 things they would like to learn in the training session
I considered this approach as I didn't want the program to come across like any other theory-types lecture. My aim was to give the maximum in the limited time I had. For the same, I chose to club all the difficulties into distinct groups so that the training would be precise and absolutely to the point. This approach stems from the Six Sigma way. Based on the various responses I received, I made five distinct groups to prioritize what everyone wanted to learn:
- Insert - functions, tables, graphs
- Formatting - header, footer, slide master
- Animation - objects, text
- Graphs - excel, picture
- Concept - short, concise, meaningful
I framed my slides to address all the above five groups and gave demo examples. Trust me, this really worked well as it was a totally customized deck which was able to meet their expectations.
2. My Color Question interactive game:
From some of my previous good training programs, I've picked up one pattern - theory has to be blended with a little fun to make it more effective. There is a lot of psychology behind it which I wont discuss here, but it's always worked for me and I decided to adopt the same approach. I thought a lot and came up with my own game (some innovation here!), I called it 'My Color Question'
I basically created small cards with a colored star and a alphabet on one side and on the other some blank space to write your name and a question!
I made a pair for each card, i.e. for a Blue-A there was another Blue-A, similarly Yellow-B x 2, Red-C x 2 and Green-D x 2. These cards were kept in order and I gave them to the audience after announcing about the game.
I gave one card to one person in a sequential manner. So, now each person had one part and there was one person in the hall with the same card, i.e. he was his color pair! I asked everyone to write their name and one question on what they still haven't understood in this training session. I gave them 3 minutes to think and write after which I asked them to exchange their color cards with their respective pairs, i.e. the one who had Blue-A was supposed to exchange his card with the other person having a Blue-A. Like this all the cards were exchanged and I now asked them to come one by one, read out the name, the question and attempt to solve it live on the projector. Wherever they got stuck, I asked the audience - if anyone would like to assist? Many attempted to answer and this way we had 15 different questions with 15 answers - all from my audience. I believe somewhere this game really worked as it brought so much interaction and liveliness in the session. If you liked this interactive game approach, go ahead and try this at your workplace!
Finally, it was time to summarize! We learnt that a good presentation is:
- Precise and simple to understand.
- Good balance of font and color combination.
- Appropriate selection of images.
- Tables and graphs should be clearly visible.
- Proper use of animation, no overdose!
- Some creativity to capture attention.
- Keeps your audience engaged from the first to last slide.
- Conveys the message with clarity.
- Generates discussion in Q&A round at the end.
- And, doesn't allow anyone to sleep!
Like this 3 hours passed and I can say that the effort was 100% worth. I took some feedback and some of my colleagues really appreciated and said they've really picked up a lot of things and feel more confident. What more could I, 'the teacher' have asked for from 'my students'? I simply smiled back :)

They can be anybody - friends, family, colleagues. Gradually you will come across other known accounts and can follow them too. Search for some people whom you admire. It's after all a social network, the more your explore the more you get to know, the choice to follow.
- Build a Voice: retweet, reply, react - you will see messages from others as a readable stream on your homepage. Read them and retweet messages you love and want to share with all your followers. If you find any message interesting, reply to that person. Voice your reaction show others what you think and care about.

India gets its new Rupee symbol
Finally, the Indian Rupee joins the league of the British Pound, US Dollar, Japanese Yen and the Euro! The Government has approved the new symbol for the Indian Rupee which is actually an amalgam of the Devnagiri 'Ra' and the Roman capital 'R' without the stem.
The new Rupee symbol was designed by D. Udaya Kumar, an IIT Assistant Professor who won the national Rupee symbol design contest which received more than 3000 submissions. He adds that he put the horizontal line to symbolize the tricolour. Must say it's really creative and we're all proud of you Prof! :)
Ms. Ambica Soni, the Government Minister said that this symbol will lend a distinctive character and identity to the currency and further highlight the strength and robustness of the Indian economy. It will also help distinguish India's currency from similar or identical sounding names. This was summed by saying the symbol reflects and captures the Indian ethos and culture! Well said Ms. Minister!
This excitement was also evident on Twitter, where the Rupee Symbol was top ranked in Twitter's Top Trending Topics today evening (July 15, 2010, 6pm IST). There's an air of congratulatory tweets and so much is being discussed on the micro-blogging site.
Personally, I think this symbol is really cool, modern and will go a long way with India's progressive growth image! I feel like singing 'Jai ho!', might as well share the song with you which captures the bigger India. Do enjoy it!

Ogilvy - The Father of Advertising
If God were to announce the birth of the Father of Advertising, perhaps he would have said 'June 2 3, here comes Ogilvy!'
That's right, today is June 23 and it is the birthday of the World's Greatest Salesperson, aka the Father of Advertising - David Ogilvy.
Ogilvy was a man who knew the art of selling and advertising and he hated rules! In his initial years he worked as a Chef and later went door-to-door to sell Aga cooker. He was so successful at it that his owner asked him to write a selling manual which today is one of the finest instruction manual ever written. Ogilvy tasted blood when he bought postcards worth $500 for a man wanting to advertise his hotel and sent invitations to everyone he found in the telephone directory. The hotel opened in full attendance! Later, he started what is today known as the world's best ad agency - Ogilvy & Mather. It was built on his principle - the function of advertising is to sell and that successful advertising for any product is based on information about its consumer. Agree, right?
Ogilvy is an icon for all the creative wannabes! One of his phrases which I like the most is "In the modern world of business, it is useless to be creative, original thinker unless you can also sell what you create." Well, till now I haven't sold anything, but I have been successful in implementing some of my creative ideas in the otherwise monotonous ways of working! There are many books on him and two them; Ogilvy on Advertising
and Confessions of an Advertising Man
are must reads.
I've got a short video here on - David Ogilvy, Salesman: The Early Years. Watch it to get a little inspiration from his lessons, who knows you might be the next?! ;)
Lastly, I want to add that I started blogging at maktion only to make everyone experience creativity and Ogilvy has been one of my inspirations because of his creative pursuits in selling. Happy Birthday Ogivly! :)
