Ogilvy - The Father of Advertising

If God were to announce the birth of the Father of Advertising, perhaps he would have said 'June 2 3, here comes Ogilvy!'
That's right, today is June 23 and it is the birthday of the World's Greatest Salesperson, aka the Father of Advertising - David Ogilvy.

Ogilvy was a man who knew the art of selling and advertising and he hated rules! In his initial years he worked as a Chef and later went door-to-door to sell Aga cooker. He was so successful at it that his owner asked him to write a selling manual which today is one of the finest instruction manual ever written. Ogilvy tasted blood when he bought postcards worth $500 for a man wanting to advertise his hotel and sent invitations to everyone he found in the telephone directory. The hotel opened in full attendance! Later, he started what is today known as the world's best ad agency - Ogilvy & Mather. It was built on his principle - the function of advertising is to sell and that successful advertising for any product is based on information about its consumer. Agree, right?

Ogilvy is an icon for all the creative wannabes! One of his phrases which I like the most is "In the modern world of business, it is useless to be creative, original thinker unless you can also sell what you create." Well, till now I haven't sold anything, but I have been successful in implementing some of my creative ideas in the otherwise monotonous ways of working! There are many books on him and two them; Ogilvy on Advertising and Confessions of an Advertising Man are must reads.

I've got a short video here on - David Ogilvy, Salesman: The Early Years. Watch it to get a little inspiration from his lessons, who knows you might be the next?! ;)

Lastly, I want to add that I started blogging at maktion only to make everyone experience creativity and Ogilvy has been one of my inspirations because of his creative pursuits in selling. Happy Birthday Ogivly! :)
